Botond Bognar is Professor and Edgar A. Tafel Endowed Chair in Architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He received his B.S. in Architecture and MArch degrees at the Technical University of Budapest and his M.A. in Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a Japanese Governmental (Mombusho) Scholar he conducted research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TIT) for two years in the early 1970s. He also practiced architecture in both Hungary and Japan, where he lived for several years. As Principal Architect he completed several large projects, all in Hungary. For his research he has traveled extensively all over the world and visited Japan annually while maintaining close working and personal relationship with TIT. Since 1981, he has been teaching graduate (thesis) design studios and lecture and seminar courses in the Illinois School of Architecture. Professor Bognar is an internationally renowned scholar of the history and theories of contemporary Japanese architecture and urbanism. He has a long list of publications on his record: some twenty books and monographs, more than thirty chapters to books, and many essays and articles in professional journals. Also, he has lectured frequently both in the United States and many European and Asian countries, as well as in Australia. Currently he is working on two books: Modern Architectures in History: JAPAN (London: Reaktion Books) and Beyond Japan: The Japanese in the Global World of Architecture (London: Routledge). He is the recipient of several distinguished awards and recognitions including an Arnold O. Beckman Fellowship, a Japan Foundation Fellowship, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Cultural Appreciation Prize, two Graham Foundation Fellowships, an American Institute of Architects (AIA) International Architectural Book Award, the William and Flora Hewlett Fellowship, the Social Science Research Council Fellowship, the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship, the title of University Scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Endowed Chair at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST) at the University of Tokyo, Japan.
