Dr. Schneider is an ecologist and environmental historian whose research focuses on the interrelations between natural and human systems in planning and management. His research extends from work on the zebra mussel and its effects on the Great Lakes and Mississippi River ecosystems, to the dynamics of the microbial communities of sewage treatment plants. He has recently completed a book on the history of the biological sewage treatment plant that examines this critical infrastructure from the perspective of the industrial ecosystem. Dr. Schneider has also worked on aquatic ecology and water resources issues in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Spain and Mexico. His teaching covers ecological applications to planning, watershed planning, urban ecology and environmental history. He also has an appointment in the Illinois Natural History Survey.
