Dr. Blake is an Associate Professor in the iSchool (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UI) with a courtesy appointment in Medical Information Science. She serves as Associate Director of the Center for Informatics in Science and Scholarship (CIRSS) where she leads the Socio-technical Data Analytics (SODA) research group and oversees the SODA specialization . Dr. Blake's research explores both human and automated methods to synthesize evidence from text. She brings industrial experience as a software developer, formal training in information and computer science and more than a decade of research experience in text mining , in particular from full-text scientific articles in medicine, toxicology, epidemiology, and diabetes. She has also explored text mining in humanities to detect authorship from movie reviews, recognize textual entailment in news stories and summarize multiple new stories. Dr. Blake teaches text mining (LIS490TX) each spring, an introductory course on databases (LIS490DB), evidence-based discovery (LIS490AG) and foundations of socio-technical data analytics (LIS490AD) that all contribute to the specialization in socio-technical data analytics Before joining UI, she was an assistant professor in the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), a graduate student in the School of Information and Computer Science (ICS) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and a graduate and undergraduate student in the Faculty of (Informatics) at the University of Wollongong (UoW) in Australia (Note that Aussies call a School a Faculty). She also worked as a research scientist for what was BHP Melbourne Research Labs (MRL) and as a programmer analyst at what was BHP Information Technology. The research lab is now part of BHP Billiton, and BHP-IT has since been purchased by Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC).
