EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: PhD, Biophysics, University of Michigan, 1969
Irving Salmeen joined the Ford School's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program in July 2011. Since 2007, he has been a research scientist with the University of Michigan's Center for the Study of Complex Systems. He teaches an undergraduate course on social-systems and energy (Public Policy/Complex Systems 250) focusing on how culture and human choices, constrained by physical and biological science, shape technological systems and inform energy policies. In 2006 he retired, after 36 years, from the Scientific Research Laboratory of Ford Motor Company. From 1998-2006 he headed the Lab's Systems Analytics Department, which worked on mathematical models to solve business and manufacturing problems; environmental impacts of emerging vehicle technologies; vehicle-software systems for off-board driver connectivity; and vehicle-technology decision-problems from consumers' perspectives. From 1994-98, he managed the Ford Labs Chemistry Department, which worked on urban air quality, the technical foundations of vehicle emissions regulations, global climate-change modeling, and environmental aspects of manufacturing operations. Prior to his management career, he was a staff scientist working in environmental science. His PhD is in biophysics and his undergraduate degrees are in engineering physics and mathematics, all from the University of Michigan.
