Paul works on philosophical problems with resources drawn from biology, neuroscience, and psychology. He is a member of three interdisciplinary organizations with international scope, the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC), the International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB), and the Society for Philosophy and Psychology (SPP). He is the author of various articles and of two books, Subjects of the World: Darwin's Rhetoric and the Study of Agency in Nature (U. of Chicago Press 2009) and Norms of Nature: Naturalism and the Nature of Functions (MIT Press 2001).
