Hannah Rosen received a B.A. from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Her research and teaching have focused on the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States, and particularly on African Americans and the intersection of race and gender in histories of slavery, emancipation, and postemancipation society. Before joining the faculty at William & Mary, Rosen taught at the University of Michigan in the Program in American Culture (courses on the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery and emancipation, and citizenship) and the Women’s Studies Program (courses on feminist theory and the history of sexuality). At William & Mary, Rosen’s teaching will focus on African American history and on interdisciplinary approaches to studying race.
