Dr. Wylie Burke is Professor of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington. She is also Principal Investigator of the University of Washington Center for Genomics and Healthcare Equality, an NIH-funded Center of Excellence in Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research and dual Principal Investigator of the Northwest-Alaska Pharmacogenomic Research Network. Her research addresses the social, ethical and policy implications of genetic information.
Dr. Burke received a Ph.D. in Genetics and an M.D. from the University of Washington and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington. She was a Medical Genetics Fellow at the University of Washington from 1981 to 1982. Dr. Burke was a member of the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington from 1983 to 2000, where she served as Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1988 to 1994 and as founding Director of the University of Washington's Women's Health Care Center from 1994 to 1999. She was appointed Chair of what was then known as the Department of Medical History and Ethics in October 2000 and remained Chair of the re-named Department of Bioethics and Humanitiesuntil 2014. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine.
