Prior to joining the Sociology Department in Fall 2014, Freeden Oeur was an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Tufts. He is also a Faculty Affiliate with the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Professor Oeur is completing a sole-authored book (with the University of Minnesota Press) that examines how and why two urban public high schools adopted an all-boys model, and with Edward W. Morris is co-editing a volume on contemporary masculinities targeted to undergraduate students (with Sage Publications). His other ongoing research analyzes how disadvantaged young men strive for dignity, how charter school communities engage in school choice, and new ways of theorizing boyhood. His past research has looked at the non-normative sexual practices of male youth, and the place of religion and spirituality in contemporary U.S. higher education. At Tufts, Professor Oeur has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on sociology of education, the education of women and girls, masculinity in schools, and feminist theory; and will teach future sociology courses on men and masculinities, education, and social theory. He is a 2013 recipient of the Tufts Teaching with Technology award, and was a 2013 Faculty Fellow with the Tufts Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching.
