Dr. Jeffrey Malecki grew up in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He holds degrees in music education and conducting from Central Michigan University, VanderCook College, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Malecki began his career with great success at Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where the program transformed into one of the largest in the Glendale district, and received numerous awards. While at UNLV, Dr. Malecki conducted the renowned Wind Orchestra, Las Vegas Youth Wind Orchestra, and Community Band, which earned him opportunities to conduct in Ireland and Italy. His dissertation on the life and transcription style of Col. John R. Bourgeois has lead him to further research in cataloguing Col. Bourgeois' Marine Band programs and analyzing common trends. Dr. Malecki is thrilled to be joining the USD Music Department, especially with the unique opportunity of starting a brand new band program and music education degree!
Malecki’s dissertation on the life and transcription style of Col. John R. Bourgeois has lead him to further research in cataloguing Col. Bourgeois' Marine Band programs and analyzing common trends. Other interests include sound concept-centered warmups for band. Dr. Malecki also remains an active performer on euphonium. He recently performed a featured recital at the Midwest Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in Bowling Green, Ohio, which follows a similar recital in California in 2008 and leading the UNLV tuba euphonium ensemble at the 2009 International Conference in Tucson, Arizona. He has also performed with the City of Cambridge Brass Band (England) and Orcestra Sinfonica de Trujillo (Peru), a group he will revisit in May 2016 as a conductor. He can be heard on “Concertos for Brass,” as a soloist on Thomas Bough’s Euphonium Concerto, released on Summit records (2014).
