Her research interests include prevention of infectious diseases in the developing world and evaluation of vaccine effectiveness. She served as the Temporary Consultant on malaria for IntraHealth International, and she performs clinical work in the Community Health Center setting with Piedmont Health Services. Dr. Becker-Dreps was awarded a four year career development award from the NIH/Fogarty International Center to study the effectiveness of the rotavirus vaccine in Nicaragua. She is also the prinicpal investigator on two studies involving rotavirus vaccine effectiveness and diarrhea etiologies in Nicaragua, which involved collaboration with the Health and Demographic Surveillance Site in Leon, Nicaragua. Becker-Dreps has a great deal of clinical experience in Latin America. In Guerrero, Mexico, she started a diabetes education program, supervised five child nutrition campaigns, and provided continuing medical education to physicians. She has also worked at a public hospital in Ures, Sonora, Mexico. In Honduras, she worked at a large public hospital in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. In Ecuador, she participated in medical outreach by plane to an indigenous community and performed H. pylori epidemiology research.
