Professor Brook Hailu Beshah was a practicing senior diplomat and was the deputy permanent representative of Ethiopia to the UN and the deputy ambassador of Ethiopia to the U.S. He played a key role in the multifaceted bilateral relations between the Ethiopian and US governments. He also oversaw public diplomacy activities in reaching out to the American public; the Ethiopian Diaspora; U.S.‐based NGOs, think tanks, religious and humanitarian organizations. Professor Beshah has an in‐depth knowledge of the workings of the UN and played a role in the deliberations and adoption of international conventions such as the Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions and the International Convention against Doping in Sport. He also participated in the follow up, implementation and monitoring process of enacted conventions such as the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. He is a well‐known personality; sought after expert analyst and resource person in African and Middle Eastern issues and is occasionally interviewed by International TV and radio stations and the press in such topics as international security; Africa; peace and conflict; democracy and governance; culture and media. Between April and June 2008 alone, Professor Beshah had three major appearances on the BBC TV International, broadcasted globally, and was interviewed over the crisis in the southern African nation of Zimbabwe. Professor Beshah has lectured at different US; European and African universities. For several years until 2009 he was an adjunct professor at the Elliott School of International Affairs, George Washington University; at the University of Maryland; The Washington Center; at the Northern Virginia Community College; Leipzig University in Germany. As guest professor he had lectured in Ohio University, Athens Ohio, Charles University, Czech Republic; Institute of International Journalism in Berlin Germany, University of Butare in Rwanda; University of Manchester, UK just to name a few. He was a former Dean and currently a full time professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Strayer University. Dr. Beshah’s academic career goes back to 1980 where he was a full time faculty at the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He lectured in international relations, political science and media courses. From 1998 to 2000, he served distinguishably as Head of the External Relations Office of Addis Ababa University promoting academic and research collaborations with US, European and African universities, various research institutions and supervising international student exchange programs.
