Over the past 30 years Dr. August has published numerous papers addressing issues of diagnosis and classification, comorbidity, natural history and treatment pertaining to children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In recent years, he has expanded his research program to include the prevention of antisocial behavior and drug abuse, where early childhood disruptive behavior is conceptualized as a risk factor. During this period, he has developed and validated an early-age-targeted prevention program that has been recognized as an exemplary drug abuse prevention program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s National Registry of Effective Prevention Programs, a model program by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Model Program’s Guide Database, and a research-based program by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. August is currently principal investigator on several prevention projects, supported by NIDA and NIMH addressing issues pertaining to the transportability and dissemination of evidence-based revention program to community systems of care. He was recently awarded a Center grant from NIMH to study the adaptation of preventive interventions to fit the needs and preferences of children at risk for serious conduct problems.
