Amanda joined the Department of Sociology at Wake Forest as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2013. She completed her undergraduate degree (2001) and M.S.S.W (2003) at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her Ph.D. (2014) at Brandeis University. Broadly, her work explores the interactional reproduction of inequality. Her previous ethnographic research analyzed gendered rhetorics and processes of control and resistance at a battered women’s shelter. Her current research examines the work parents do to get the best possible medical care for children with life-threatening illnesses, and to manage the difficult emotions involved in the illness process. Her work has been funded by the Mellon Foundation and the National Science Foundation, and has appeared in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Social Problems, and Symbolic Interaction, among other outlets.
