Jan Boehmer joined the School of Communication faculty as an Assistant Professor in 2014. He received his Ph.D. in Media and Information Studies from Michigan State University and also holds a degree in Online Journalism from the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany). Dr. Boehmer investigates the influence of new & social media on journalistic routines as well as audience perceptions and behaviors. He focuses on multimedia, convergence, and participation in the realms of sport communication, online journalism and political reporting. Dr. Boehmer’s research has been published in journals such as “Computers and Human Behavior” and the “International Journal of Sport Communication”. He has also written book chapters and frequently presents his work at national and international academic conferences. At the University of Miami, Dr. Boehmer teaches “Social Media for Journalists” and “Data Journalism”. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Boehmer has more than ten years of experience in journalism. He has worked for newspapers, radio and television stations, as well as online publications. He currently works as a freelance sports writer for the German media where he covers the NBA and NFL.
