Karen Braun, CPA, PhD, is the lead author of a managerial accounting textbook used at over 200 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. She is also a three time recipient of the Weatherhead Undergraduate Teaching Award voted upon by CWRU students. Dr. Braun is actively involved in accounting education at the national level, co-chairing a national conference on accounting education and publishing papers in well-respected accounting education journals PhD, The University of Connecticut, 1996 BA, Luther College, 1985
Her teaching philosophy is to encourage students to think like business people first and then focus on how managerial accounting can be used to help solve business problems. In addition to teaching, Dr. Braun has often been invited to speak to campus groups about personal financial planning. She is also a conservationist and master recycler and regularly discusses with her classes how companies can become more profitable by becoming more sustainable. Prior to beginning her teaching career 18 years ago, Dr. Braun was an auditor for a leading international CPA firm (Arthur Andersen & Co.) and a corporate controller. In her personal life, Dr. Braun is the mother of two college-age daughters and an avid outdoors enthusiast who loves to ski, hike, and bike, including a recent 6-day bike trip across Austria.
