Matthew Boyle came to Harvard after earning a B.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. His main interests are in the philosophy of mind, on the one hand, and Kant and German Idealism, on the other. Topics he is working on include: the importance of self-consciousness, the nature of concepts, the Kantian notion of a "pure concept," the division of the mind into parts or faculties, the relationship between sensation and perception, and some problems about how to understand irrationality.
