Marianne Krasny is a Professor and Director of the Civic Ecology Lab in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University, specializing in community environmental stewardship and environmental education in urban and other settings in the US and internationally.
Marianne Krasny has an active graduate program with 6 PhD students and one MS student in 2009-10. Her current graduate students are part of her Civic Ecology Lab, and conduct research on the individual, community, and ecosystem outcomes of community-based environmental restoration and related environmental education programs. Research sites range from after-school programs involved in restoration of the Bronx River watershed in NYC, 4-H civic ecology education programs in military communities in upstate NY, community forestry post-disaster in New Orleans, community and environmental engagement for at risk youth in Ithaca NY, and village groves in Korea. Several students who are in the latter stages of their work focus on citizen science and resident environmental education programs. Recent graduates are working in faculty positions at Antioch New England and Dennison Universities. Although she does not have a formal teaching appointment, Krasny supervises undergraduate research and extension interns, and works with the student organization Friends of the Gorge to involve students in enhancing recreation, stewardship, and safety in the campus gorges. As Chair of the Department of Natural Resources, Krasny works with our Teaching and Curriculum Committee to support an undergraduate program that integrates the ecological and social sciences. She also works to: (1) incorporate the study of urban social-ecosystems in the undergraduate curriculum; (2) meet the needs of an increasingly diverse undergraduate student population; (3) incorporate sustainable practices into ongoing work with students; (4) maintain field experiences for students in a time of limited budgets; and (5) build the graduate curriculum in partnership with other graduate fields. Finally, as Co-Chair of the Cornell Environmental Sciences Planning Committee, she will be working to plan for an integrated environmental sciences curriculum across campus.
