Southampton Solent University is celebrating 10 years of being awarded university status in 2015. It continues to develop as a dynamic and ambitious international University with more than 19,000 students based at city-centre and waterfront campuses. The university prides itself on excellent employability, focusing on courses that offer real-life job opportunities, placements, internships, and industry expertise and networking opportunities. Solent was one of the first universities to be granted the new Small Business Charter, recognising its exceptional engagement with small- to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and the strength of its support for student entrepreneurs The university is a Skillset-accredited centre of excellence in television production, broadcast journalism, screenwriting and performance, with industry-standard expertise in live event broadcast, studio and post-production. Students are part of the official Glastonbury festival filming team, and regularly work on BBC events. Maritime studies is also a particular strength, with courses in yacht design producing some of the most influential designers in the industry. The alumni list includes gold-medal Olympians and record-breaking solo sailors. Accommodation The university provides 2,340 places. Fees range from £94.99 to £138.60 week (for 41 weeks), inclusive of bills (the more expensive rate is for ensuite). Facilities Work has begun on a new £30m teaching and learning building on the main campus in the centre of Southampton, due for completion later in 2015. A new £1.4m city-centre site for the school of art and design was officially opened in June 2012, and a £4.m industry-standard, FA-accredited sports facility operational opened in May 2012. The university also has a state-of-the-art £2m media academy including newsroom, computer and video-game design areas, and photography, radio and music studios. Solent's world-leading maritime facilities include a new engine-room imulator, one of the world's first superyacht academies, and a £3m shipping-handling centre, one of only five in the world. Transport The city has excellent transport links by road, rail and air, thanks to the nearby Southampton International airport, which links with a number of cities in the north of England, Scotland, Ireland and the Channel Islands.
