专业描述

Kinesiology (the study of human movement) & Health Sciences prepares students for a wide variety of academic and professional pursuits. An emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion in society is opening opportunities in a variety of health related areas including physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistants, nursing, public health, medicine, nutrition, aging studies, and sports related fields. Our department’s focus is to prepare undergraduate students for post-graduate education and subsequent professional careers in those fields. Since ours is exclusively a baccalaureate degree awarding department, all of our teaching and research efforts are dedicated to our undergraduate students. Within the Department of Kinesiology & Health Sciences, students may choose to receive a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. In addition, students may – but are not required to - select one of the following concentrations: Health Sciences (B.S.), Pre-med (B.S.), Public Health (B.S.). Coursework in each of these concentrations may include the following: Introduction to Kinesiology & Health Sciences, Introduction to the Human Body, Human Physiology, Human Anatomy, Motor Learning, Science of Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Cardiovascular Physiology, Physiology of Aging, Physiology of Obesity, Exercise in Public Health, Foundations in Epidemiology, Introduction to Clinical Practice, Health Ethics, as well as many others. In addition, students are encouraged to seek additional experience either through research or internship opportunities. Over the last 5 years, approximately 80% of graduating Kinesiology & Health Sciences majors entered graduate or professional schools. Of those entering professional schools, approximately 80% were in the allied health fields and 20% in medical schools. Thus, the typical major in this department is pursuing a career in a medical, health, or research profession.
