A mark is an impression, a goal or target, a distinction. Making a mark suggests an activity, a process or experience. The “mark” and how it is made exemplifies what is taught, practiced and realized each day in our classrooms in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. UAB’s Department of Art and Art History is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Nationally and internationally active scholars and artists who promote creative inquiry, scholarship, and innovation are actively teaching in our classrooms and studios. Our faculty not only emphasize, support and set high expectations for our students, but they foster the individual voices of our students and help them realize their potential. Their dedication has long-lasting effects as our alumni have continued to excel in their chosen fields. A vibrant Visiting Artist and Scholar series enhances our curriculum by bringing nationally and internationally renowned artists, scholars and designers to UAB for lectures, workshops, critiques and exhibitions. I am thrilled to present UAB’s Department of Art and Art History at such a pivotal moment in the Department’s trajectory, UAB’s growth, and Birmingham’s rebirth. I am excited to share this website which was created by our student designers during the Fall 2013 semester.
