Why Study Math at Fisher? Mathematics has two important facets—an abstract and logical system, and the ability to model and express real-life phenomena. Our math faculty will assist you in acquiring an appreciation and mastery of both these facets. With either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, you will be qualified to undertake advanced studies, become a qualified teacher of mathematics, or pursue a career in any of the many areas where math is applied. Majoring in Math The goal of the math program is to enable you to become an active participant in the study of mathematics, a confident and sophisticated learner, and an independent and collaborative thinker. Because of the influence of other disciplines on the content of mathematics, we offer courses that serve the mathematical needs of many departments, such as the natural sciences and business. For those interested in secondary teaching certification, we model best practices in the teaching of mathematics in our own pedagogy. For specific course descriptions and major requirements, refer to the Undergraduate Catalog section on mathematics. Successful Mathematics Alumni Graduates of our programs have distinguished themselves as mathematicians and can be found on the faculties of the University of Pittsburgh, University of Tennessee, University of Wisconsin, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Monroe Community College. Many of our graduates have gone on for advanced degrees and have distinguished themselves as professionals in other fields. We point with pride to those who have entered the field of secondary education and are noted for their distinguished service as teachers and administrators. Others have become scientific programmers, statisticians, and actuaries.
