The Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary, research-intensive major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. Our program focuses on understanding the biological basis of neural processing, behavior and cognition. Training in neuroscience requires a broad, interdisciplinary foundation in the natural sciences, and the major requires students to complete foundational courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics and psychology. In upper division courses, students explore the field further, read and discuss primary research articles, and carry out independent laboratory research. Flexibility in course selection at the upper division level allows further specialization in concert with student interest. Students who successfully complete this major will be well-prepared for graduate study in neuroscience or in related disciplines. The Program is jointly administered by the Biology and Psychology Departments. Faculty at St. Thomas are dedicated to outstanding teaching, mentorship, and research. In addition to a research-intensive, lab-based curriculum, students have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on research projects. Students in the Neuroscience Program have presented their research at regional meetings such as MidBrains and the Minnesota Academy of Science, and at international conferences including the Society for Neuroscience, Experimental Biology and the American Psychological Associationannual meetings.
