The Mathematics Program offers students coursework in both pure and applied mathematics, research opportunities (three undergraduate students presented mathematical research at the 2016 JMM in Seattle, Washington), and personalized mentorship by outstanding faculty. Additionally, our students are provided with free mathematics tutoring and a modern computing facility that includes access to software including Maple, SAS, R, and Matlab. Dr. Anna Haensch Our faculty (Dr. Anna Haensch) are committed to excellence in both teaching and research. Many undergraduate research projects have been supported by faculty grants. Faculty expertise ranges over a wide variety of subjects including statistics, graph theory, mathematical finance, number theory, mathematical biology, image processing, and more. Our students are involved in math-related activities outside of coursework, including Pi Mu Epsilon and departmental seminars. What can you do with a Mathematics degree? Anything! The analytical and problem-solving skills students learn in mathematics can apply to all disciplines. In fact, a study by PayScale shows that the top 15 highest-earning college degrees have a common element: mathematics. Many Duquesne mathematics graduates with dual degrees in education are employed as teachers at the secondary level. Math students who also have studied business now work in finance, actuarial science and corporate tax services at Xerox, Liberty Mutual and other organizations. Further, graduates of our program have been admitted with assistantships to a number of excellent doctoral programs in mathematics, including those at the University of Minnesota, the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Iowa.
