More than half of New York speaks Spanish, and the United States has the second largest Spanish-speaking population, after Mexico. A wide variety of career fields – including business, education, medicine, and journalism – seek candidates with Spanish language skills. For this reason, a major or minor in Spanish opens up many opportunities for students once they graduate. Programs in Spanish offered at St. John’s University prepare graduates to read, write, and speak in Spanish, understand important aspects of Spanish civilization, and become familiar with Spanish literature. All students are encouraged to participate in summer study abroad opportunities in Argentina and Spain, where they can master linguistic, cultural, and social skills in addition to their course work. There are also internships available to students abroad and through local Spanish institutions.
