For our undergraduate major, students combine courses in American Studies with courses from relevant disciplines in literature, history, the arts, and social sciences. The undergraduate major encourages innovative, non-traditional scholarship; it also requires a substantial foundation of knowledge of the United States from local, national, and global perspectives. Each student chooses one of five areas of concentration: national formations; the international United States; material cultures and built environments; politics and American communities; and visual, audio, literary, and performance cultures. Students interested in the major are encouraged to consult with the sophomore advisor as early as possible. Students are also encouraged to schedule a meeting with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the spring of their sophomore year. At this meeting, the DUS will acquaint prospective majors with the majors worksheet and go over course transcripts to begin charting progress in the major.
