The Department of Mathematics at USC provides an excellent environment for the study of mathematics. There are more than 200 undergraduates pursuing a major in mathematics and another 30 or so students working towards one of the mathematic-based minors. One way in which our program stands out from many other programs is the broad selection of regularly-offered Honors sections of upper-level MATH courses. These courses are available for our best students, whether they are a member of the South Carolina Honors College or not. This feature of our program has been instrumental in our graduates' successful transition to graduate school in mathematics as well as other disciplines, including medicine, economics, and law. Graduates with a B.S. in Mathematics from USC have been successful in a variety of careers. Our program is one of the largest providers of high school math teachers in SC. A growing number of students are pursuing careers as an actuary. Students pursuing this option can reasonably take, and pass, the first actuarial exam (Exam P/1) after completing about 50% of the major courses. The Department is fortunate to be able to award a number of scholarships and awards each year. Undergraduates have an opportunity to be involved with research with faculty in our department. A number of these students have success in USC's Magellan Scholar program. Several students have received recognition as Goldwater Scholars, Wooddy Scholars, Knowles Teaching Fellows in Mathematics, and NSF Graduate Research Fellows, among others. In addition to the academics, our department sponsors a local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics honorary society) and the Gamecock Mathematics Club. Activities include a Sudoku Night, Integration Bee, Mathematical Limerick Competition, Dessert and Game Nights, and Math Movies. PME and GMC also participate in several service projects to USC and the local community throughout the year. Additional information about our program can be found from the links on the Undergraduate Program webpages. We encourage you to find out more about our department and programs.
