Biology is advancing at an unprecedented pace due to the emergence of high-throughput empirical methods, large-scale analysis, and increasing use of theoretical, computational and statistical models aimed at a more mechanistic understanding of biological phenomena. The UCLA Department of Biomathematics has a rich and long history in mathematical and computational biology of combining these approaches and is one of the few departments that emphasizes all of these components. The research interests of our department range from basic to applied fields such as mathematical and statistical genetics, mathematical physiology, theoretical biophysics, evolutionary and systems biology, molecular and medical imaging, oncology, and clinical pharmacology. We foster and train undergraduates, clinical masters students, graduate students, and postdocs to understand empirical data, analyze it with cutting-edge algorithms, gain insight through the development of mechanistic, mathematical models, and collaborate with basic and clinical scientists in the design of novel, testable experiments.
