Welcome to the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering website! This site’s main objective is to provide you an overview of the educational and research opportunities within our department. Civil and Environmental Engineering offers some of the most exciting career opportunities. We are educating professionals who will be responsible for creating a sustainable world by being planners, designers, constructors, and operators of the built and natural environment. Our graduates are expected to be leaders in the discussions and decisions shaping the public environmental and infrastructure policy. Our department has achieved significant milestones since its establishment in 1906. In 2007, Sonny Astani, a 1978 USC alumnus, donated $17 million to the department. The naming gift has enhanced the department’s capabilities and academic experience for our students. Some great moments about the Astani department include the formation of student organizations and the David M. Wilson Affiliates (DMWA) alumni organization. Student organizations such as ASCE student chapter (1924), Chi Epsilon (1924), and AGC (1994) were formed to unite students and create a sense of community within the department. In 1958, a group of civil engineering alumni founded DMWA as an alumni support group to honor Professor David M. Wilson. The department has experienced tremendous growth since it’s founding and will continue to achieve milestones through its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering includes 20 tenured-tenure track faculty members, 5 teaching faculty, and 8 research faculty and 35 lecturers. The Department has 556 students (232 undergraduate, 261 masters, 63 Ph.D.). The Department offers Ph.D. degree programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and a broad range of Master's programs in Structural Engineering, Structural Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Environmental Quality Management. The Department also offers undergraduate BS degree programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, Building Science (Architectural Engineering), and Water Resources Engineering.
