The UNC School of Media and Journalism's responsibility is to train the next generation of media professionals, including journalists, strategic communicators, teachers and researchers – and to serve journalism and communication professionals. Our most important assets are our students and graduates. We hold true to the core principles of media and journalism education while leading the transformation in the digital communications environment. We are harnessing technology to enhance our mission of teaching, research and service. The result is a highly engaged school with a significant voice in the evolving issues of our time. In 2009, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications said the school “has earned a reputation as one of the premier programs in journalism and mass communication.” The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in journalism and mass communication, and administers a variety of professional development and distance learning programs. Enrollment includes about 650 undergraduates and 135 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Through a revamped curriculum, students learn the skills they need to succeed in the new media environment, whether they pursue careers in journalism, advertising, public relations or other communications fields. The school offers specializations in editing and graphic design, electronic communication (television and radio broadcasting), multimedia, photojournalism, reporting, advertising, public relations and strategic communication. Special programs in business journalism, Latino journalism and media, science and medical journalism, sports communication, health communication and a joint M.A./J.D. degree are also offered. The school is located in Carroll Hall on the historic Polk Place quad of the nation’s first public university – just a short walk from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s iconic Old Well. Carroll Hall has been equipped with state-of-the-art classrooms, labs and media production facilities. It is also home to the extensive Park Library; the Charles Kuralt Learning Center; the N.C. Halls of Fame for journalism, advertising and public relations; and the Freedom Forum Conference Center.
