The IAM Ph.D. is a unique Applied Mathematics program designed to facilitate interdisciplinary research among graduate students and participating faculty. This interdisciplinary program gives students the opportunity to explore the frontier where the sciences meet cutting-edge mathematical analysis and high performance computing. Science topics include Fluid Dynamics, Plasma Physics, Space Physics, Geoscience and Dynamical Systems. Applicants to the IAM Ph.D. program are expected to have a bachelor's degree in mathematics or an appropriate science or engineering field. Inquiries regarding the program may directed to Prof. Greg Chini. If you already have a specific interest in one of our research programs, we can have a faculty member and/or a current graduate student who works in that area get in touch with you. They will be able to tell you about their current research, give a description of living conditions in Durham, and provide information about student activities. For more general information, please call or email us. The program generally provides financial support to incoming graduate students in the form of teaching assistantships (TAs). Most students are supported as research assistants in the summers. Research assistantships (RAs) become the dominant source of support as students progress in the program.
