生物统计学

专业描述

Students may pursue graduate study in biostatistics through the Biostatistics Program, jointly administered by the Department of Biostatistics of the School of Public Health (SPH) and the Department of Mathematics & Statistics of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS). As a joint effort, the program offers students the opportunity not only to gain expertise in mathematical statistics but also to specialize in the epidemiologic, medical, and bioscientific applications of statistics. Students are required to take courses in both the Department of Mathematics & Statistics and the Department of Biostatistics. The program offers a Master of Arts (MA) in Biostatistics and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biostatistics. Students may specialize in one of three areas: 1) clinical trials, 2) statistical genetics, and 3) observational studies or take a general course of study. Our 25 faculty members are deeply involved in a wide range of methodological areas encompassing observational studies, clinical trials, and statistical genetics with collaborative research projects that include determining risk factors for cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and others, healthy aging and longevity, the effects of substance use on mental and physical health, Gulf War illness, DNA sequencing, and Superfund research on the impact of hazardous waste sites on community health. In teaching our students, we emphasize the statistical aspects of research, including study design, data management, and statistical analysis, as well as communicating the results in a meaningful way.
