At Boston University, an innovative undergraduate curriculum and graduate programs leading to the Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees prepare students for careers in research, industry, academia, and government, as well for graduate professional programs. ECE undergraduates study today’s technologies—computer networks, wireless and fiber-optic communications, medical imaging, revolutionary solid-state materials, digital media, energy systems, software innovations, and much more. Students are prepared to become leaders in the field while gaining a strong foundation in math, science, and the humanities. The department emphasizes close contact with professors in the classroom and in laboratories, and provides opportunities to conduct research alongside the faculty and their graduate students. Graduate students can choose from programs leading to the Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs, which emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, enable students to develop an understanding of the scientific and mathematical principles that form the foundations of emerging technologies and prepare students for the application of sophisticated analysis and design methods to solve a broad range of societal and technological problems. The Electrical & Computer Engineering department hosts a diverse and vibrant research portfolio in areas such as photonics, nanotechnology, energy, electromagnetics, electro-physics, space science and technology, multimedia processing, information and decision systems, communications and networking, computer networking, distributed systems, computer-aided design, and more. These endeavors are represented by three main research areas: electro-physics, information systems and sciences, and computer engineering. While each area hosts a distinct, faculty-centered group, interaction and interdisciplinary work are fostered and nurtured in numerous settings. Students have the opportunity to conduct research in any of these groups under the guidance of ECE faculty, through access to University-wide centers and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Research in ECE has a strong funding base from governmental agencies, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
