Duke University

Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering

生物工程与生物医学工程

专业描述

Biomedical engineering is a dynamic and exciting field in which engineers, scientists and clinicians collaborate to address major scientific questions in human function and pathology and develop novel technologies to improve human health. Duke BME has a long history and we continue to be one of the leaders in the field. We offer a research program that involves close collaboration with the Medical School faculty. Our research program benefits from the proximity of the Duke University Medical Center and the collaborations with basic medical scientists and physicians. The seamless integration of basic and translational research in the department creates exciting synergies that facilitate new discoveries. Graduate students become involved in research from the time they begin their graduate study. The doctoral program allows students, working with their faculty advisors, to develop a focused course of study to prepare them for their doctoral research and subsequent career. Undergraduates are involved in research through independent study projects that count for academic credit and the Pratt Fellows Research Program. Our educational programs provide a core of engineering, physical and biomedical sciences and mathematics and advanced courses that apply these concepts to various biomedical problems. To enhance learning, many of our required undergraduate courses have a laboratory component. In this way, students can quickly see the application of the concepts they learn in class. Advanced classes deal with current research and design topics and students are exposed to the latest developments in the field. Undergraduates have opportunities to develop depth in another field of study through minors, certificates or second majors. We offer a range of design courses that cover the key areas of the field as well as applications for persons with disabilities and designing for resource poor environments. Students can participate in DukeEngage and Engineering World Health to apply their engineering skills in a variety of novel and important ways. They can be involved with new companies through the Duke Start-Up Challenge and DuHatch. The website provides information about our research and educational programs, student and faculty awards, and the latest contributions by Duke BME faculty and students.
