Our department consists of ~35 faculty conducting research in a wide spectrum of areas within the biological sciences, ranging from the molecular to the community level, and from laboratory- to field-based empirical and analytical approaches. There are four core areas of research emphasis: 1) Ecological Processes, 2) Evolutionary Genetics and Systematics, 3) Functional Adaptations, and 4) Host-Microbial Interactions. Many of our faculty are multidisciplinary with their research, spanning two or more of core areas. The department has over 500 undergraduate majors and over 100 graduate students (PhD and MSc). The three undergraduate majors offered through the department are Marine Biology, Microbial, Cellular & Molecular Biology, and Organismal Biology, with some offering multiple formal options for specialization. Biological Sciences has a strong commitment to undergraduate education; in addition, students are encouraged to participate in research and internship opportunities. Both faculty and graduate students in our department routinely win teaching and research excellence awards. Several recent graduate students have been awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, and undergraduate majors have been recognized as Goldwater Fellows, USA Today Academic All-Americans, and Fulbright and Gates-Cambridge Scholars.
