A finance degree familiarizes you with the institutions, theory, and practice involved in the allocation of financial resources within the private and public sectors. The program encompasses the major areas of finance including corporate finance, financial institutions and markets, and investments. In addition, the program offers elective work in real estate and risk management and insurance. The degree also prepares you for graduate studies in business, law and public administration. If Wall Street is your goal, the Sterne Agee brokerage firm has funded The Student Investment Program, an interactive program that allows a team of students to manage a $50,000 investment portfolio for which Sterne Agee and the Harbert College of Business share equally in the gains. The College also maintains a state of the art TIGER (Trading, Investing & Global Economic Research) Trading Lab that recreates a professional trading environment and allows you to get hands-on training in securities trading, financial modeling, and valuation. The lab also features a Bloomberg terminal, which gives you access to one of the most extensive databases of information available in the financial world.
