Welcome At the undergraduate level, the French Department offers numerous courses covering everything from language to literature and cultural studies. Approximately 800 undergraduate students take French courses every semester and the Department continues to expand its course offerings to keep up with demand. Language classes are capped at twenty students to ensure the best possible learning environment. Please access these highlighted links for information regarding the French Language Requirement and the French Language Placement Test. Undergraduate Majors The Department offers two undergraduate majors: one in French Language and Literature, the other in French and Francophone Studies. The French Language and Literature major is designed to give students an in-depth familiarity with the language, culture, and literature of France and the French-speaking world. The French and Francophone Studies major is conceived as an interdisciplinary continuation of Columbia’s core course in Contemporary Civilization: it seeks to examine key concepts and dichotomies such as universalism vs. exceptionalism, tradition vs. modernity, citizenship and national unity from their origin in the French Enlightenment to their present status in France and the French-speaking world. In addition to the majors offered by the Department of French and Romance Philology via Columbia College, prospective students may wish to explore undergraduate studies at Barnard.
