Economics helps us to understand how a society determines the distribution of its resources and how these decisions affect society. Issues studied include the production, distribution, and consumption of resources; the acquisition and distribution of wealth; the choices and tradeoffs that result from the central problem of scarcity; the role of markets; the global marketplace; the role of the government in the economy; and the incentive effects of policies. Economists build and test models that help both to clarify these issues and to inform policy makers. Economists also provide insights into the ways in which personal and social life both influence and are influenced by society's need to manage its resources. You should consider majoring in economics if you find these fields interesting and if you believe that the discipline will provide you a useful means of clarifying your understanding of the world and your place in it.
