Columbia University’s Theatre Program is international, collaborative and interdisciplinary. It is defined by its location in New York City, and by the extensive network of Columbia alumni and faculty who run prestigious Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatres; direct and perform in Tony- and other award-winning productions; and teach, mentor and engage with students beyond the classroom. Coursework is centered on experience on campus and off, both within and beyond a student’s concentration. Working in partnership with other concentrations is encouraged, and Collaboration class, offered in the second semester of the first year and taught by Anne Bogart, brings actors, directors, playwrights, dramaturgs, and managers together into creative teams. An integrated part of Columbia and New York City life, students are also encouraged to take on opportunities at Columbia’s other acclaimed graduate institutions. Theatre Management & Producing, Dramaturgy, and Stage Management students take classes with a wide range of New York’s most established producers, managers, and publicity agents, often directly in their offices throughout the city. Due to these connections, we are able to build relationships between students and acclaimed professionals, facilitating them to acquire sought after internships and coveted jobs. The third year is devoted to thesis productions, with performances held in theatres throughout New York City, including the Pershing Square Signature Center, the Connolly Theatre and 3LD. Third-year MFA Acting students and two Stage Management students per year are offered Actors Equity Association (AEA) eligibility through our partnership with Classic Stage Company.
