Our Mission The mission of the Department of Biomedical Sciences is to educate and inform the veterinary and human biomedical communities through our diverse research and clinical service excellence as well as through our commitment to undergraduate, graduate, and veterinary teaching. In doing so, we foster a world-class research, clinical, and teaching environment with particular emphasis on innovation in all of our activities. Our Values •Excellence in education, research, and clinical service •Collective responsibility for mentorship and promoting excellence of faculty and trainees •Continual introduction of innovation and technology-driven methods in all areas •Awareness and consideration of emerging biomedical issues of local and global importance •Promotion of diversity in all departmental activities Our History The Department of Biomedical Sciences was formed in 1998 from the three previously existing Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathology in an effort to develop interdisciplinary programs and enhance interdisciplinary teaching efforts. Faculty research programs focus on molecular and integrative physiology with specific strengths in genetics, cell and developmental biology, and comparative pathology emphasizing murine models. The Department serves as faculty home to the Diagnostic Anatomic Pathology Service and residency training programs in Anatomic Pathology and Lab Animal Medicine. The Department of Biomedical Sciences has major teaching responsibilities within the DVM professional curriculum, in the Graduate curriculum, and in important areas of Undergraduate Biology. Faculty in our Department share major teaching responsibilities throughout the DVM professional curriculum, with particular emphasis in Foundation Course I, The Animal Body; Foundation Course II, Cell Biology and Genetics, Foundation Course III, Function and Dysfunction, and Anatomic Pathology. Numerous graduate-level courses are taught by Biomedical Sciences faculty including key courses related to the Genomics Minor at Cornell. Biomedical Sciences faculty members make important contributions to the undergraduate curriculum within the Undergraduate Program of Study for Animal Physiology. The Departments of Biomedical Sciences and Microbiology and Immunology also offer an Undergraduate Minor in Biomedical Sciences.
