Linguistics as a formal field of study at Cornell dates back to 1946. Ours is a diverse but highly interactive department. We offer one of the top Indo-European comparative linguistics programs in the country, and also have a leading-edge computational linguistics lab, a phonetics lab, and active research groups on topics including the syntax/prosody interface and the relation of language spread to rice agriculture. Cornell linguists do in-depth empirical work on languages ranging from Cheyenne to Yiddish. Our research emphasizes the theoretical bases for that work, in syntax, semantics, phonology, phonetics, and historical linguistics
