Ali studies networked, dynamic systems, and their applications to science, engineering and biology. His research is focused on the emergence of global phenomena from local interactions in complex networked systems such as the internet, Facebook, and networks of robots and sensors. By developing new tools and protocols for analysis and design of such systems, Ali works to find mathematically rigorous answers to questions of group behavior, ranging from how people form agreement through networked exchange of ideas to how birds flock and fish school.
