Matthew Edmonds has been teaching interior design at LSU as a professional in residence since 2004. Edmonds received his Bachelor of Interior Design from Louisiana State University and is a registered interior designer in Louisiana and Texas. He is a NCIDQ certified designer and a LEED AP BD+C. He has worked as a design draftsman, senior store manager, and design manager for Gap, Inc., and is currently the designer and owner of Commercial Design Interiors. His project experience includes design and project management in all areas of interior design including project phasing, space planning, programming and program management, code compliance, facility evaluation, value engineering, document preparation and contract administration, cost estimating and budgeting, FF&E specifications, and facilitating installations. Specialization includes environmental wayfinding, sustainable strategies (LEED), presentation rendering, furniture design, and construction. As an instructor of interior design at LSU, Edmonds developed a new core curriculum class (ID 1780) to introduce and instruct prospective interior design students to technical drafting fundamentals. He has taught various studios, with emphasis on technical drafting, construction documents, and instruction on the language of graphics and the practice of the design process. He has guided students through methods to apply the proper analytical skills and techniques required to communicate design intent and information critical to the project to both design professionals and the general public. He also developed a sustainable strategies class with a focus on LEED interior design and construction—more than 75 students have graduated from the interior design program with LEED Associate Professional credentials. Edmonds organized and led several student organization trips to major city centers, including New York, San Francisco, and Chicago, to expose students to different cultures, arts, and professional interior design/architecture practices. He has led and/or participated in alternate learning methods through field trips to Haworth Worldwide Headquarters, Masland carpet mill tours, and the Main Street Marketplace collaborative summer project. Edmonds actively participates in the School of Interior Design intern program by offering and employing student internships through Commercial Design Interiors, LLC. Commercial Design Interiors currently employ five full-time LSU interior design graduates and one LSU interior design intern.
