I am Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of California Santa Barbara. Previously I taught at Syracuse University. My research focuses on the history of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy, including early modern metaphysics, natural philosophy, philosophy of religion, and metaphilosophy. Publications include The Architecture of Matter: Galileo to Kant (Oxford, 2004), Spectres of False Divinity: Hume’s Moral Atheism (Oxford 2010), “Hume’s Absolute Necessity”, Mind 123.490 (2014), and “Hobbes’s First Cause” (forthcoming in the Journal of the History of Philosophy).
