Her teaching interests include modern and contemporary Japanese literature, language and media, and she has taught at five universities including The University of Chicago and the University of Michigan since receiving her PhD in 2001.

She is co-editor, with Ruth Barraclough and Paula Rabinowitz, of a volume of scholarly essays on proletarian desire around the globe mid-20th century: Red Love Across the Pacific: Political and Sexual Revolutions in the Twentieth Century (Palgrave, forthcoming 2015). She is the guest editor of Proletarian Arts in East Asia: Quests for National, Gender, and Class Justice, a special edition of positions: east asia cultures critique (Fall 2006). Bowen-Struyk is completing a manuscript on Red Love in Japanese proletarian literature.
