Michael Brownstein has been teaching courses on Japanese language and culture at Notre Dame since 1982. His dissertation and subsequent publications centered on the Meiji Period writer Kitamura Tokoku (1868-1894) and Meiji Period literary thought, especially the impact of Western literary criticism on Japanese writers in the late 19th century
