Frederick F. Woerner served for 34 years in the United States Army, including assignments in the United States, Vietnam, and Latin America. The majority of his career was devoted to Latin America, where he served in Colombia, Uruguay, Guatemala, and Panama, among other places. He also spent time as the Director of Latin American Studies at the United States Army War College. From 1982 to 1986, Woerner commanded the 193rd Infantry Brigade in Panama, and was concurrently commander of the United States Army Security Assistance Agency, Latin America. He served as the Commanding General of the Sixth United States Army at the Presidio of San Francisco from March 1986 to June 1987. His final posting for the Army was as Commander in Chief of United States Southern Command, from 1987 to 1989, for which he was promoted to four star rank. He served as Chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission from 1994 to 2001. Woerner retired from the Army in 1989 and taught at Boston University from 1990 to 2003.
