Edwin Rogers has been at Rensselaer since 1965. In 1976-77 he was visiting Research Professor at the University of Waterloo and in 1983 was Visiting Scientist at the General Electric Research and Development Center. Prior to coming to Rensselaer, he was a research technician at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and an officer at the USArmy Ballistic Research Laboratories. He earned B.S. (Physics), M.S. and Ph.D. (Mathematics, 1962) from Carnegie-Mellon University, where he was a Westinghouse Scholar. He directed the Rensselaer's Computer Science Lab in the late 70's and 80's and has directed the Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Computer Science. Teaching innovations in matrix and numerical analysis, VLSI and parallel system design and software engineering have marked his teaching efforts. He has served on numerous advisory panels in government, business and academe. In the late 70's and early 80's he was an editor and managing editor for the Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics. In the late 80's he was an award winning contributor to the development of pre-engineering education in secondary schools in New York State and has played a key role in the development of Rensselaer's recent professional M.S. programs for secondary school teachers. In 1989-90 he was chair Rensselaer's Faculty Council. Since then he has served Rensselaer as a fiduciary of its retirement programs, including two years as chair of the Institute Retirement Committee, as chair of the Faculty Planning & Resources Committee, as a member of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee and recently as member of Rensselaer's Executive Budget Committee. He has served on two highly successful presidential searches, in 1975 & 1998.
