Deanna Birdyshaw served for two years as the school’s coordinator of secondary teaching education. Her research interests include professional development, assessment, and secondary teacher preparation. She teaches courses in undergraduate and graduate secondary teacher education focused on literacy in the content areas. Birdyshaw served as associate director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA) from 1999 to 2005, and is currently serving as the coleader of the Master of Arts in Educational Studies with Secondary Teacher Certification Program. Before coming to the University of Michigan, Birdyshaw served as English language arts consultant for the State of Michigan. She has 28 years experience teaching English and literacy in high schools. She earned her PhD from Oakland University. Her areas of research include studying the ways in which preservice teacher knowledge of text complexity influences their instructional choices and how integration of digital records of practice influence preservice teachers’ development of the knowledge and skill associated with effective teaching.
