I am interested in the problems of hunger and food insecurity in the United States, and in the roles played by public policies, communities, nonprofits, schools, and the broader food environment in ensuring that households have access to affordable and healthy food. My training is in the area of Social Welfare Policy, and I am particularly interested in the role of public policies and programs in addressing hunger. As a faculty member in SoHE, I work in a creative and interdisciplinary environment that encourages applied research that makes a difference in the real world. In much of my work, I focus on understanding differences in hunger from place to place – whether among communities in Wisconsin, or among states in the country. As a Food Security Research and Policy Specialist with UW-Extension, I work with county Extension educators to learn about the extent of hunger in their communities, and to explore research-based solutions.
