Kristen Kurland has been teaching at Carnegie Mellon University since 1994 and is a Teaching Professor of Architecture, Information Systems, and Public Policy at the Heinz College and School of Architecture. Professor Kurland's research focuses on interdisciplinary collaborations using geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. Projects include health, the built environment, economic development, urban design, and sustainability. Her teaching includes building information modeling (BIM), computer aided design (CAD), 3D visualization/animation, computer aided facilities management (CAFM), and GIS. At the Heinz College, she also teaches Infrastructure Management to executive physicians in the Master of Medical Management (MMM) program. She also has a strong interest in distance education and has been teaching on‐line courses at CMU since 1999. Professor Kurland received the Heinz College Martcia Wade award for teaching excellence in 2005. She also received the 1998, 2000, and 2003 Excellence in Education award from Archibus, Inc. for her CAFM teaching programs in the community and at Carnegie Mellon. She is President Elect of the Executive Board of the Andrew Carnegie Society and is the chair of the ACS Scholars committee. In addition to her full time position at CMU, she is the president of a local consulting firm that has implemented computer technology programs in numerous organizations since 1989. Her clients include architects, engineers, hospitals, universities, corporations, as well as local, state, and federal governments. Kristen Kurland and her Heinz College colleague, Professor Wil Gorr, have recently written five geographic information systems workbooks and currently they are writing a GIS core concepts textbook for Esri Press.
